The motif is a historical photograph. It shows a group of people digging up potatoes. They are all concentrating on their task. The entire motif radiates a sense of calm and timelessness. It is much more than just a harvest scene. The portrayal is an archetype for the relationship between the give and take between humans and nature.
Painting is an intense form of making contact. Questions and imaginations arise. What influence does a landscape have on the people working within it? Are they aware of it? Do they consciously or subconsciously perceive it as an aesthetic experience?
Our feeling for landscapes is now being wrenched apart. Entire tracts of land are being transformed into monotonous agricultural areas. Countless natural inputs triggering our sense of beauty are disappearing.

Untitled #12
200x260 cm, sandy soil, acrylic on cotton, 2022

For this painting I use the sandy soil from the area in which the historical photo motif was taken. By painting with the real soil of the place I "fade" the times. The farmland soil of today, this is our present, which arises from the past.
