PEARLS IN THE SAND OF THE MARK BRANDENBURG is a mise-en-scène. It takes place in a room whose walls have been painted a dark red. On its four walls hang 12 paintings—each about 20 by 30 inches—showing landscapes from the Mark Brandenburg. The paintings are colored in delicate greyish pastel tones. It appears as if a heavy layer of dust had settled on them over time and now it is as if the original colors The images appear remote yet familiar. The paintings are mounted in wide, matte blue frames on which here and there gold can be seen shimmering through.
A red velour carpet covers the floor in front of the paintings, which are illuminated so that they shine brightly against the room’s dark red background. Low, upholstered visitor seats have been placed in the center of the room. To prevent outside light or noise from penetrating the room, the entrance has been closed with a heavy velvet curtain.

The western part of Berlin was surrounded by the Wall at that time. For the exhibition, posters with the names of the places on the other side were put up. They seemed strange.
